Book Review: To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han
*I am talking in my high pitched voice because I really like this book*
To All The Boys I've Loved Before! <3
First off, I am starting with the book cover! Isn't it just gorgeous? :)
I love stories like these. You may think this is so cliche, but it is... and somehow it isn't. It's about Lara Jean Song who is a junior and has two sisters, Margo (older) and Kitty (younger). It's a story about love, family, friendships, forgiveness, acceptance and looking forward.
"To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the story of Lara Jean, who has never openly admitted her crushes, but instead wrote each boy a letter about how she felt, sealed it, and hid it in a box under her bed. But one day Lara Jean discovers that somehow her secret box of letters has been mailed, causing all her crushes from her past to confront her about the letters: her first kiss, the boy from summer camp, even her sister's ex-boyfriend, Josh. As she learns to deal with her past loves face to face, Lara Jean discovers that something good may come out of these letters after all"
What would you do if your crushes all knew you had a crush on them all at the same time?! I would freak. I also liked the way Lara Jean lets go of the love she had by writing to them. :) I love her optimism and I love how she's like an overthinker somehow just like me. Just a simple girl. She's also genuinely kind, caring and loving. She stays that way until the end.
"To belong to someone— I didn’t know it, but now that I think about it, it seems like that’s all I ever wanted. To really be somebody’s, and to have them be mine."
(I especially loved this quote. It's like Redamancy. To love and having that love be returned.)
I also love stories with families that are so close and shows their love for each other openly. It's so sweet how they care for their dad and make it easy on him. I love their relationship as sisters even though sometimes they bicker and fight about stuff. Their distance makes it hard but family is family. You have persons who you can't be mad at and you love unconditionally. Like a built-in best friend who you can tell everything to.
The part that I also loved was the male characters. Josh and Peter have such different personalities. You're kinda torn with Lara Jean for the both of them. It's like you're also puzzled about which one do you like more. :) Josh's character was the super nice and lovable boy-next-door that's been there all her life and the boy she had strong feelings for but she knows she could never have.
Peter, on the other hand, is like this cliche bad boy character in so many stories I've already read but the way Jenny Han writes about him... it's different. Like he's this handsome-bad-boy-from-a-movie but in he's just a sweetheart who are really close to his mom and brother but has and ex dangling. I love his little digs and gestures that shows that he genuinely like Lara Jean. I love how both the boys are so close to Kitty, the most adorable fictional little sister I've read.
"I wonder what it’s like to have that much power over a boy. I don’t think I’d want it; it’s a lot of responsibility to hold a person’s heart in your hands."
"He was her first, which means he’s her always "
If I keep posting quotes on the book I'd probably write a long-ass blog post. But I really like this book! :)
Okay, you should definitely go read it! <3 x
